About Us

HGI is proud to champion diversity, equity, and inclusion in all aspects of our work. We are committed to amplifying voices from various backgrounds, including race, gender, age, religion, identity, and cultural experience, as we promote mental wellness. At HGI, everyone is welcomed and valued. We believe it is essential for our employees, learners, volunteers, clients, and communities to be heard and supported. Together, we are dedicated to cultivating an inclusive environment.

Over the years, our therapists have engaged in groundbreaking research and training, producing some of the most innovative work in family counseling in the nation. This has established HGI as one of the most internationally and nationally recognized counseling, research, and training facilities in the United States and around the world. Our model has inspired universities, institutes, and governments globally to replicate HGI’s programs and set up their own family counseling institutes. Additionally, HGI offers a training certificate that is recognized throughout the mental health industry worldwide.

Located in the Greenway Plaza area, HGI collaborates with a variety of organizations and community agencies, including the Harris County Domestic Relations Office (DRO), Communities in Schools (CIS), AVANCE/Head Start, Covenant House, Houston ISD, Alief ISD, Lamar Consolidated ISD, and many more. We are continually forming new partnerships within the community to provide workshops, counseling, and training for administrative teams and their clients. HGI works alongside government agencies, non-profits, for-profits, and various organizations.

Our services are accessible to individuals from all walks of life and economic backgrounds. With over 40 years of experience, HGI’s therapists have encountered a wide range of challenges and understand the unexpected twists that life can bring. We are here to support individuals when life doesn’t go as planned.

Additionally, we have therapists actively engaged in low-income communities, providing affordable counseling to children and families who have endured significant hardships, including abuse, neglect, and violence. Without HGI’s programs and services, many of these families would lack access to vital counseling support to help them navigate their challenges and break free from cycles of intergenerational trauma and poverty.

HGI also serves as a Mental Health Disaster Provider, deploying our team to schools and communities during crises, such as school tragedies, hurricanes, and other disasters, addressing unexpected needs as they arise.

Through our efforts, many families in low-income communities have been able to pursue training opportunities and enter the workforce, setting a positive example for their children and paving the way for a brighter future for the next generation.
